Hilton HHonors 2014 Q3 double and triple points promotion prematurely launched last week when there was a promotion registration page. I registered for the new Triple Your Trip promotion and wrote about the 2014 Q3 offer seven days ago.

Loyalty Traveler: Hilton HHonors 2x and 3x points August 1 to October 31, 2014 (July 9, 2014).

HHonors 2014 Q3 registration

You are registered for Hilton HHonors 2014 Q3 Triple Your Trip promotion August 1 to October 31, 2014

The next day Hilton HHonors removed the 2014 Q3 promotion registration page. For most of the past week the HHonors.com/Triple went to a ’404 Not Found’ page. Now the link redirects to a message “Hilton HHonors promotion coming soon”.

HHonors promotion soon

Hilton HHonors promotion coming soon page currently shows when clicking HHonors.com/triple link.

Basic Information on Hilton HHonors Double and Triple Points

Hilton HHonors 2x and 3x points August 1 to October 31, 2014 gives 30 points per dollar earning for hotels stays on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night and 20 points per dollar for stays on Monday to Thursday nights.

HHonors 2x/3x Promotion FAQ shows how bonus points are calculated on this page from the 2013 same offer. This is the only link that currently works.

The big question for HHonors members is which hotels have opted out of this offer? There is a link to nonparticipating hotels with the message ‘Coming Soon”.

Hopefully Hilton will get the promotion registration page back online soon with a list of nonparticipating hotels. I suspect the missing link delaying this 2x/3x offer is the list of non-participating hotels. Until we know which hotels opt out, this offer is hard to evaluate. Triple points is a high value bonus from HHonors – if you are staying weekend nights at a hotel participating in the promotion.

Book a stay of two nights or more at Country Inns & Suites by May 31 for stays June 1 through August 31, 2014 and earn triple points (60 points per $1). Promotion applies to hotels in USA, Canada and Latin America. Club Carlson members must register for this offer by May 31.

  • Register for Country Inn Triple Points by May 31.
  • Book a stay of two or more nights May 1 – May 31.
  • Stay from June 1 to August 31. Both check-in and checkout dates must occur during promotion period.
  • Triple points applies to Country Inns & Suites in USA, Canada and Latin America.

This looks to be the best of the promotion offers seen so far for summer travel in the USA. Assume a rate of $100 and triple points earns a member 6,000 Club Carlson points.

Spend $500 in summer hotel travel and earn 30,000 Club Carlson points + elite bonuses, if applicable. 30,000 points are enough for two free nights at a category 3 hotel for members with a Club Carlson Visa card. That is a great rebate on $500 in hotel spend.

Country Inns 3x summer 2014

Country Inns & Suites Triple Points for stays June 1 – August 31, 2014.

Club Carlson has an offer for up to 100,000 points per stay at Carlson Rezidor Hotels (Radisson Blu, Radisson, Park Plaza, Park Inn and Country Inns & Suites) in Asia Pacific from April 28 to August 31, 2014.

Earn double points (40 points per $1) for one-night stays and triple points (60 points per $1) for two-night and longer stays. Hotel spend of $1,667 on a stay earning 3x points will max out the 100,000 points limit.

Club Carlson bonus points can be earned on multiple stays.

This promotion does not apply to stays or nights redeemed through Points + Cash, or for Award Nights.

I’d like to see a similar offer for the USA, however, we may not get this good an offer. Hotel rates have been dropping in Asia while still rising on record profits in the USA for most hotel chains.

Hilton HHonors launched its 2013-Q3 promotion this week for triple points on Friday, Saturday and Sunday or double points for stays on Monday through Thursday nights.

There are about 650 hotels in the USA not participating, so check this Hilton hotel exclusion list carefully. Fewer than 50 hotels in the rest of the world have opted out.

HHonors promotion registration is required at HHonors.com/triple before your first stay.

The average nightly rate for your stay is used to determine points. This can play in your favor if you pay for cheap weekend nights on the same stay as one or two expensive midweek nights since you will get triple points on a higher average rate for weekend nights or it could work against you if you have a cheap weekend night on the same stay as several expensive weekday nights.

Regardless, this is a good bonus points offer when staying at a participating Hilton brand hotel. The exclusion list of 20% of US Hilton brand hotels is the main drawback to the promotion. Check the nonparticipating hotel list carefully before counting your points.

The HHonors promotion FAQ explains how double and triple points are calculated.

US Net Folio: $1,038.38 x 10 pts per $1 = 10,383 BASE Points
10,383 BASE Points / 7* = 1,483 Average Points Per Night
*(replace 7 with total # of nights of the stay within the Promotion Period)

  • Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights (3 nights) will receive Triple Points
  • Triple  Points is always 2 x BASE. Therefore, 2 x (BASE) 1,483 = 2,966
  • 2,966 (triple points value) x 3 (total nights that are eligible for triple points) = 8,898 (total triple points for 3 nights)

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights (4 nights) will receive Double Points
  • Double Points is always 1X BASE. Therefore, 1 x (BASE) 1,483 = 1,483
  • 1,483 X 4 (total nights eligible for double points) =  5,932 (total double points for 4 nights)

8,898 (total triple points) + 5,932 (total double points) = 14,830

HHonors promotion FAQ

The main point to understand is triple and double points only apply to 10 base points per dollar.

Double points = 20 points per dollar.

Triple points = 30 points per dollar.

HHonors Points & Points earners receive an additional bonus of 5 points per dollar.

HHonors Points & Miles earners receive 20 or 30 points per dollar and miles based on the regular earning rate for miles.

Choice Privileges triple points starting with your second stay at any Choice Hotels brand worldwide for members in USA, US territories and Canada on stays from December 13 to February 20, 2013. There is a limit of 50,000 bonus points, but at 20 bonus points per dollar that is at least $2,500 in spend and will not be a concern for most travelers.

Choice Privileges Triple Points registration is required.

Seven Choice Hotels brands earn 30 points per dollar with triple points promotion (10 base points per dollar + 20 bonus points per dollar).

  • Comfort Inn
  • Comfort Suites
  • Quality Inn
  • Clarion
  • Sleep Inn
  • Cambria Suites
  • Ascend Collection

Four Choice Hotels brands earn 15 points per dollar with triple points promotion (5 base points per dollar + 10 bonus points per dollar).

  • MainStay Suites
  • Suburban Suites
  • EconoLodge
  • Rodeway Inn

Elite Platinum and Diamond members earn an additional 100 bonus points per stay booked through ChoiceHotels.com. These bonus points do not count toward the 50,000 bonus points promotion limit.

Eligible bookings include stays booked at ChoiceHotels.com or 800.4CHOICE.

Members may also book through a travel agent or corporate online booking system.

This can be a good value promotion for either the extended stay guest or the frequent stay guest. The main thing is to be sure and book a cheap first stay if your travel plans will take you to a hotel where you will have a few hundred dollars in spend.

There are some desirable vacation properties in the Ascend Collection and Choice Hotels with over 5,000 properties in the USA, has more hotels in the USA than any brand except Wyndham Hotels. Choice Privileges is a program to keep in mind if you are taking a road trip and need roadside lodging.

Assume you have a stay at a Clarion where you expect to spend $800. In this case you should book a $50 to $60 hotel night at a Choice Hotels brand prior to your high spend stay.

Clarion $800 stay earns 8,000 points normally.

Spend $60 for a first stay so the $800 Clarion stay earns triple points.

Stay 1: Quality Inn $60 earns 600 points. Check in and leave. You do not even need to stay the night to make this a qualifying stay if you check-in.

Stay 2: Clarion stay at $800 earns 24,000 points.

16,600 points for $60 is a good investment since this is sufficient for two low season hotel nights in Paris, London and many international locations where rooms rates run $200 per night.

Bottom line: Choice Privileges triple points is a good promotion for midscale and budget hotels. The recurring 8,000 points for two stays Choice Privileges promotion is a great deal for hotel one-nighters. This triple points offer has more benefit for the extended stay and higher spending guest.

Best Western Rewards next month offers up the kind of hotel loyalty promotion I really dislike with Fall12 for double or triple points. Triple points is a great offer of 30 points per $1 in hotel spend for a stay at a Best Western hotel booked online at BestWestern.com. The part I dislike is the bonus points are only earned for every other stay.

Fall12 Terms and Conditions

  • Triple points (30 points/$1 including base points) for a stay booked online at BestWestern.com.
  • Double points (20 points/$1 including base points) for a stay booked through other BestWestern channels.
  • Stay between September 23 and November 18, 2012. A stay that overlaps these dates will earn the bonus points of rthe entire stay. Example: November 15-20 will earn bonus points for the entire stay (if it is otherwise eligible).
  • Best Western Rewards non-elite members may earn the Fall12 bonus points on 2nd and 4th stays.
  • Best Western Rewards elite members may earn the Fall12 bonus points on 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th stays.
  • Earn a one time 1,000 bonus points if first two stays are paid using Best Western Rewards MasterCard.

SPG Better by the Night is the newly announced promotion. Starwood Preferred Guest offers double Starpoints, 4 points per $1, on 1 or 2 night stays from October 1 through December 20, 2012. Stay 3 nights or more and earn triple points, 6 points per $1.

Bonus points are in addition to the additional 2 points per $1 using the SPG American Express card to pay for the hotel stays and 1 bonus point per $1 for SPG Gold or Platinum elite status.

About 10% of Starwood Hotels are not participating in this offer. The list is not fixed though. Starwood Lurker has posted several hotels that decided to opt in over the past day and more may follow. See the August 23 list of hotels not participating in this offer at the end of this post.

You will earn from 4 to 10 points per $1 during the SPG promotion. Read More…

Starwood Preferred Guest launches its “Better by the Night” 2012-Q1 promotion on January 9 with double points for two night stays and triple points for longer stays through April 8, 2012. There are no bonus points for one night stays. There is no limit to bonus points members may earn with this offer.

Registration is required by March 15, 2012.

Registration confirmation page for SPG 2012 Q-1 promotion.

This promotion is valid for about 70% of Starwood Hotels worldwide with all Asia-Pacific hotels opting out of this offer. About 50 hotels in the USA are not participating, so check the hotel exclusion list carefully when planning your stays so you are not surprised when your $1,000 3-night stay does not earn an anticipated 4,000 extra bonus points with the triple points offer. Germany, Italy and Greece have many nonparticipating Starwood Hotels. Link to hotels excluded from this offer.

Loyalty Traveler Analysis

As a rule of thumb I estimate I will earn 1,000 bonus points from SPG promotions per stay. I am not that impressed by this offer. One night stays earn no promotional bonus points with this offer.

Stay two nights and spend $300 and you earn an extra 600 bonus points with double points.

Spending $1,000 on an extended stay will earn 4,000 bonus points (3x points bonus) with this promotion. That is a decent bonus on a high-priced extended stay, but is not appealing to me as a promotional incentive when I can get two free nights with Marriott Rewards after four stays (under $500) or 10,000+ points on a cheap $180 two-night weekend stay with Hilton HHonors.

Spend-based bonuses like this SPG offer leave minimal opportunity to leverage cheap stays into free nights like the Hilton and Marriott offers for Q1-2012.

SPG has a good offer for free weekend nights at Asia Pacific resorts with Two Days of Happy running through March 15, 2012. This SPG promotion earns one free night after five nights and two free nights after 9 nights when paying with MasterCard. There are over 200 hotels for earning free nights and nearly 90 resorts for redeeming free weekend nights by April 10, 2012. Nights do not need to be consecutive nights at the hotels. Five one-night stays at participating Starwood hotels will earn one free weekend night.

Fine Print Nuances for this Offer

Starwood’s FAQ for this promotion has an interesting term regarding a stay that includes a reward night on points or Cash & Points night combined with paid nights.

If part of my stay has an Award Night or a night using Cash & Points, will my stay qualify?

Free Night Awards and Cash & Points are not Starpoints-eligible rates. Even if part of the stay is Award and part is paid, the member will not receive bonus credits for any part of the stay.

You do not want to include a reward night within a paid consecutive nights stay at a Starwood Hotel during this promotion. For example, if you booka 5th night free reward from Sunday-Thursday followed by two paid nights on Friday and Saturday, then you will not receive double points for the Friday and Saturday night portion of the stay stay since these paid nights are part of the same 7-night stay as the 5th night free reward.

Other fine print:

  • Bonus points will be earned for a Starwood Hotel stay started before January 9 if guest checks out after January 9. Double or triple points will be earned for entire stay. The same principle applies for stays having arrival date before April 8 and check-out after April 8. Double or triple points will apply to entire stay.
  • Members who register by March 15, 2012 will receive retroactive credit for all eligible stays during the promotion period completed prior to registration.
  • Members may receive double or triple points for up to two rooms as long as SPG member is one of the guests.
  • Third night free and other extended stay rate discounts count all nights for this promotion according to Starwood Lurker on FlyerTalk since revenue is divided up between all nights.

Calculating Double and Triple Starpoints

  • SPG members earn 2 Starpoints per US$1 as the base rate for earning Starpoints.
  • Double Starpoints = 2 bonus points per US$1 total earning rate.
  • Triple Starpoints = 4 bonus points per $1 total earning rate.
  • SPG Gold and Platinum elite members earn 1 bonus Starpoint per $1. Elite member bonus is one additional point per $1 on top of the 2x/3x rate.
  • SPG American Express cardmembers earn an additional 2 bonus points per US$1 if Starwood Hotel stay is paid using SPG AmEx card.

Excluded Hotels for SPG Better by the Night promotion

(Once again there are no city/state identifiers for hotels. As if it isn’t bad enough to have a large list of excluded hotels for a hotel loyalty promotion, the hotel loyalty programs expect SPG members to know the hotels by name and deduce the geographic location on your own!)

Best Western has a convoluted fall 2011 promotion offering double points/miles or triple points/miles for some stays from September 12 and November 20, 2011. The bonus is confusing since it only applies to every second stay and has different earning limits depending on elite status and whether the member chooses to earn points or miles.

Fall Promotion Details

  • Promotion registration is required prior to stays. Read the different promotion rules before choosing which version of this offer for registration.
  • Earn double points for every second stay (20 points per US$1). (see earning limit rule below)
  • Earn triple points for every second stay (30 points per US$1). (see earning limit rule below)
  • Earning limit: Non-elite members may earn the bonus only two times on 2nd and 4th stays. Elite members may earn bonus only four times on 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th stays. (Miles version has no earning limit).
  • Triple bonus points: Stays in two different types of the three Best Western types (Best Western, Best Western Plus, Best Western Premier) results in triple bonus points. The additional bonus points will be added after the promotion ends for members who meet the two different hotel types criteria.
  • AAA/CAA members earn an additional 1,000 points bonus when qualifying for this promotion if registered using these promo code links: www.bestwestern.com/fallaaa or www.bestwestern.com/fallcaa.

Got all that fine print?

Best Western Rewards has made this promotion unnecessarily complicated for what is ultimately a relatively low value bonus.

Sample Bonus Points Earning showing why the order of your hotel stays matters.

Best Western Stay 1: September 19 – Best Western Park Crest Inn, Monterey California

  • $120.89
  • 1,200 base points
  • No promotion bonus points

Best Western Stay 2: September 27 – 30 (3 nights) Best Western Plus Victorian Inn, Monterey California

  • $143.20 x 3 = $429.60
  • 4,290 base points
  • 4,290 double points bonus (2nd stay)
  • 4,290 triple points bonus (two types of Best Western hotels)
  • 12,870 total points for second stay.
  • 14,070 total points for these two hotel stays.

The main thing to remember for this promotion is the bonus is based on the money spent for only the 2nd, 4th, 6th or 8th hotel stays. You may want to plan out stays to be sure the high spend stays fall on these alternate stays.

Using the same two stays shown above, but in reverse with the three nights high spend stay first and the lower spend stay second will result in far fewer points.

  • Stay 1 = $429 = 4,290 base points
  • Stay 2 = $120 = 1,200 base points + 2,400 bonus points.
  • Total Best Western Rewards points = 7,890 total points.
  • Original stay pattern shown = 14,070 points for the same amount of hotel spend.
  • Depending on which stay is second the total points earned changes by 6,180 points for the same hotel spend.

Bonus Miles promotion has an advantage and disadvantage

Members can register for double or triple miles with American Airlines or Aeroplan or Airmiles.

The rules are basically the same when choosing to earn double miles on every second stay. Members earn triple miles if stays in two different types of Best Western hotels during the promotion period. The advantage of the miles bonus promotion is there is no limit to the number of times this bonus can be earned and the hotel spend per stay is not a factor. The number of miles earned is independent of hotel spend.

Double miles = 500 miles on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and so on … stays for AAdvantage or Aeroplan.

Triple miles = 750 miles.

Miles can be a better deal for someone with low spend stays.

  • Stay 1 = $70 for 250 AAdvantage miles.
  • Stay 2 = $60 for 500 or 750 AAdvantage miles.
  • Double miles = 750 total miles. (Double points = 2,000 points)
  • Triple miles = 1,000 total miles. (Triple points = 2,500 points)

Bottom line is this offer is rather complicated and not necessarily worth strategizing too much over unless you have a really high spend Best Western stay planned. There are bonus miles and points to be earned, and with hotel rewards typically in the 16,000 points range, this offer might get you a free night or two or a couple thousand bonus miles if you frequently stay at Best Western hotels.

Choice Privileges offers triple points beginning with the second stay between January 6 and March 2, 2011. There is an additional 500 points per stay bonus beginning with second stay for Choice Privileges Platinum and Diamond members who register here.

Choice Privileges calls this their “spring” offer. Choice Hotels must be working off the global warming calendar if spring is now considered January and February in the USA?

By the way this offer is only valid for members with a USA address.

Eligible Dates: Jan 6, 2011 – March 2, 2011

Book at ChoiceHotels.com or by phone at 800-4CHOICE and earn triple points beginning with second stay.

Choice Privileges Platinum and Diamond members earn an additional 500 points per stay, beginning with second stay. Registration required.

The unique aspect of this offer is the ability for Choice Privileges general members and Gold Elite to earn double points for stays booked through other channels like Expedia, Travelocity and such.

I find it a curious target group for general members and gold elite, but not including Choice Privileges Platinum and Diamond elite members for the third-party booking bonus. Registration is required before your stay to earn double points with third-party bookings.
