Norwegian Airlines launches new routes this summer including Los Angeles to Milan MXP nonstop. There is a great deal available today for LAX to Milan MXP at $190 one way for 12 dates in July.
Deals abound for one way travel from the USA to European cities this summer. Getting back is generally double the price.
The lowest round trip price I see for a return LAX-MXP-LAX in July 2018 is $580 with Norwegian.
The real deal here is for people who can use a one way only ticket and get back on miles.

For round trip travel there are some deals with Delta Airlines for LAX-MXP-LAX as low as $662. Google Flights shows $587 tickets on Delta, but I could not get these dates to price out. There were Momondo.com searches pulling up July fares around $600 with Oneworld Airlines.

The difference in price between alliance flights and low cost carriers is narrowing now that many of the major alliance airlines are charging for bags and seats. My solution to more restrictive ticketing policies on legacy and low cost airlines has been pack lighter and smaller for free carry-on to avoid checked bags and bag fees on most transatlantic flights.
