Marriott International Marriott Rewards (replaced by Marriott Bonvoy) Moxy

Marriott Moxy Hotels rapid 2017 expansion

In early 2013 Marriott International announced a new hotel brand concept in partnership with Swedish furniture maker IKEA for a millennial focused hotel to be called Moxy Hotels. The basic concept was design an inexpensive hotel brand for tech savvy millennials with simply furnished rooms and a lobby bar social scene. Basically, an imitation of Starwood’s Aloft Hotels.

The first Moxy property at Milan Malpensa MXP Airport opened September 3, 2014. Future guidance called for another 150 Moxy Hotels to open in Europe within a decade.

Despite all the brand hype for cheap and quick expansion of Moxy Hotels, the second and third Moxy hotels did not open until March 2016 with Moxy Tempe, Arizona and Moxy Munich Airport.

June 2016, I was surprised to find myself walking by a Moxy Hotel in New Orleans.

Why Moxy Matters for Me

Marriott Rewards is not a hotel loyalty program I participate in much. The exception to the rule is when there is a Marriott MegaBonus, like the current offer Sep 1, 2017 – Jan 15, 2018 promotion for a free night certificate after two stays.

Loyalty Traveler – Free night Marriott MegaBonus and weak SPG Fall 2017 offers Sep 12-Jan 15, 2018

Moxy Hotels are some of the lowest rates around in some locations and many Moxy Hotels are located around airports, convenient for cheap one night stays.

I doubt this will help me for the current MegaBonus promotion, but I will keep Moxy Hotels in mind.

I’ve stayed at the Moxy in Milan and in Munich.

The one in Milan is a short walk from one of the terminals at Malpensa. They offer a free shuttle between terminals, for easy access to the terminal with international flights.

The Moxy Munich is in an area with clustered hotels. It is not even cose to being within walking distance of the terminals. As I recall, the shuttle to the hotel in the evening before departure was free of charge but there was a fee for taking the shuttle to the airport the following morning.

The rooms in each hotel were similar. Clean and comfortable for a one night stay by an airport, with minimal furnishings in the rooms. Breakfast not included.

It was fine for a one night stay at an airport prior to an early morning departure, and it was reasonably priced. While I am far from their demographic target, the youngish staff was welcoming and helpful, particularly at the Munich location.

I’m glad to see Marriott open more Moxy hotels. They look much more appealing than Fairfield Inn, I like the styling and I’m fine with limited service.
Will have to check one out in Germany on my next trip!
