Choice Privileges Double Points Dec 15–Feb 9, 2017

Choice Privileges stays earn 20 points per dollar for stays Dec 15 to Feb 9, 2017. Normal earn rate is 10 points per dollar. Double points are earned for up to 30,000 bonus points, which is a limit of $3,000 in hotel rate spend.

Double Points Promotion registration required before first eligible stay.

This is a changeup from the normal 8,000 points after two stays. I prefer Choice Privileges repetitive 8,000 points per two stays offer. I generally do not have longer than one night stays at Choice Hotels where I pay cash to stay.

Comparison of Double Points to 8K for 2 stays with two $70 one-night stays for $140 in room rate spend.

Double points = 1,400 base points + 1,400 bonus points = 2,800 points.
8K for 2 stays = 1,400 base points + 6,600 bonus points = 8,000 points.

Comparison of Double Points to 8K for 2 stays and 4 nights at $125 night for $500 in room rate spend.

Double points = 5,000 base points + 5,000 bonus points = 10,000 points.
8K for 2 stays = 5,000 base points + 5,000 bonus points = 10,000 points.

One of the rules for the 8K after 2 stays promotion is a minimum 5,000 bonus points if your bonus points are less than your base points after two stays.

Double Points is only a better earning promotion than 8,000 points for 2 stays if you spend more than $500 on two Choice Hotels stays or only have one stay during promotion.

Comparison of Double Points to 8K for 2 stays with 5 nights at $120 night for $600 in room rate spend.

Double points = 6,000 base points + 6,000 bonus points = 12,000 points.
8K for 2 stays = 6,000 base points + 5,000 bonus points = 11,000 points.

Double Points is a decent offer and comparable to what most hotel loyalty programs default to as a promotion when they are not being creative.

Personally, I don’t have any paid stays at Choice Hotels planned during this time period. Hopefully the 8K for 2 stays will come back in February. I will need cheap hotel rooms in late February and March when I will possibly be hanging around Paris. I like the idea of 8,000 Choice Privileges points on less than $150 in hotel spend compared to $400 in spend to earn 8,000 points during this Double Points promotion.

The old promo (8K points / AKA free $50 gift card) were called unimaginative, but it goes to show you boring can be better. I have two more nights planned this year to hit Diamond (one night stays, as usual) .

Then I’ll get in a quick IHG night early next year. That will meet 3 of the 4 Accelerate requirements for 25,000. Too bad one is the credit card use that is often slow to be credited and sometimes requires a call to customer service.

Then I don’t know. I do need about three one night stays to hit another free Wyndham night.

Have they offered the 8,000 point promotion since they changed the Choice Privilege program? With points now not expiring after two years (if there is activity) and an additional 500 points per stay Sunday-Thursday, I have guessed we have seen the end of that “repetitive” prior promotion.
