The news today that American Airlines AAdvantage program is reducing redeemable miles and elite qualifying miles earned on British Airways operated and marketed discount economy booking codes to 50% flight miles and deep discount economy booking code tickets to 25% flight miles from February 1, 2016 set off my frequent flyer alarm. I purchased American Airlines tickets two weeks ago flying British Airways operated flights from Stockholm to San Francisco next July 2016.

The key wording is British Airways operated and marketed flights.

Earn elite-qualifying AAdvantage miles when you fly on British Airways marketed and operated flights as well as British Airways codeshare flights operated by oneworld carriers and affiliates.

The changes on February 1, 2016 do not apply to British Airways operated flights marketed as American Airlines AA codeshares. At least, not yet. There have been no changes announced for reducing miles for American Airlines operated flights or American Airlines codeshare flights operated by partner airlines. All American Airlines discount economy booking codes still earn 100% flight miles.

Why my Economy N booking code ticket flying British Airways July 2016 earns 100% miles

My ticket purchase with American Airlines for flights this month and return in July offers a clear example to show readers what it actually means to be a British Airways marketed and operated flight. When searching for flights you will want to seek out American Airlines codeshare flights for 2016 flights when flying British Airways on discount economy tickets.

My American Airlines ticket Stockholm – San Francisco – Stockholm ticket flying British Airways in November 2015 and July 2016

AA ARN-SFO my ticket

British Airways #771 Stockholm, Sweden ARN – London LHR Booking Code Deep Discount Economy Class S

British Airways #285 London LHR – San Francisco SFO Booking Code N

These flights are operated by British Airways and British Airways flight numbers means they are marketed by British Airways. These booking codes are affected by the February 2016 changes reducing miles earned to 50% flight miles. My good luck is these British Airways Discount Economy S and N booking class flights are November 2015 flights. My Stockholm ARN–LHR–SFO British Airways flights are before the changes take effect February 1, 2016.

The return flights from San Francisco to London and Stockholm are scheduled for July 2016, after the reduced miles earning rules for British Airways discount economy booking codes take effect. The reduced miles for British Airways flights will not apply to my July 2016 British Airways operated flights based on the changes announced today for ‘BA operated and marketed’ flights. The SFO-LHR-ARN flights are operated by British Airways, but marketed as American Airlines codeshare flights in N class.

For the time being, all American Airlines codeshare flights ticketed in discount economy booking codes earn 100% base miles for redeemable miles and elite qualifying miles in AAdvantage.

That is my AA codeshare luck today for my British Airways summer 2016 ticketed flights. Hopefully, my luck holds out another nine months without any changes to miles earned for American Airlines codeshare flights.
