Monterey, California to Baltimore BWI or Milwaukee MKE is around $300 round trip for flights on United or US Airways for travel August to December on many weekdays and Saturdays.

I am considering a trip to Milwaukee for $300 from Monterey to travel up to Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota and perhaps Isle Royale National Park in Upper Peninsula Michigan. I checked October conditions at these parks and many of the services shut down in late September. Early September looks like a good flight time for visiting these boat oriented wilderness parks.

These fares are probably better value for travelers departing from California, since these airfares are comparable to San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland fares to Baltimore and Milwaukee.
Flying to Monterey, California
Monterey is about 110 miles south of San Francisco Airport. Car rentals are probably lower from San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. If Monterey and Big Sur are your destination, then it can be a good fare.

Monterey is a scenic coastal location with abundant marine mammal wildlife viewing opportunities.

While I may be road tripping in the upper midwest #FindYourPark #OutdoorsUSA, travelers from the east can possibly find some of the warmest weather of the year in Monterey, California in September and October. These are the months with the highest chance of the year for reaching 80 F on the central coast ocean beaches. The water can even be tolerable for splashing around without a wetsuit.
Many of our record hot temperature days along central coast and northern California for the year occur in October. These two months of September and October are still peak season for San Francisco and Monterey tourism. Hotel rates will reflect that high occupancy rate when filled with tourists. Traditionally, November 1 is the beginning of off-season when Monterey becomes primarily a weekend destination and weekday hotel rates drop by more than 50% at many hotels. Predicting that trend to hold in 2015 is harder, given the rapidly escalating rates of hotels all over California over the past three years.
September and October are generally warm and dry months before the rains come in November and December, but predictions for a strong El Nino may bring winter season rains earlier this year to ease our drought conditions.
