This fare has me thinking about a fall trip to the upper mid-west. Wisconsin is a place I would like to revisit. It has been over 20 years since I toured that state and fall leaf colors are amazing.

Another fantastic area to tour for fall colors is the far northwest tip of Illinois. Basically, the drive west of Freeport along U.S. 20 to Galena is simply stunning! Combine this with the rolling hills of northwestern Illinois, and the highest elevation point in Illinois – Scales Mound.

To me, the second to third weeks/weekends in October are considered “peak” color for that area of northwestern Illinois.

As you drive west out of Freeport on U.S. 20, head north on Illinois Route 78. Just before the Illinois/Wisconsin border, make a left on County Road 3 (also known as Stagecoach Trail), this will take you west through Apple River and Scales Mound as you wind your way through rural Jo Daviess County before winding down into the city of Galena.

Stagecoach Trail has some of the best views for fall colors that I have seen anywhere in the midwest. The topography is unusual as it does not “fit” the normal flat topography normally found in Illinois.

Timewise – about 90 minutes from Rockford to Galena. From O’Hare, head west on the Northwest Tollway (I-90) to Rockford, and follow the signs to the U.S. 20 Bypass (freeway) around the south side of Rockford. Take U.S. 20 west into Freeport, and continue west to Illinois Route 78.

Of course, Door County in northeastern Wisconsin, and the areas adjacent to the Mississippi River offer great “peak” color viewing as well.
