What is a better deal than IHG PointBreaks?

The new IHG PointBreaks list will be posted on IHG blog Friday May 22. These hotels at 5,000 points per night are low priced hotels for anyone since you can buy 10,000 IHG Rewards Club points for $70 through IHG Points + Cash rewards. Bookings will open on Tuesday May 26 for the new list of PointBreaks hotels valid for stays May 26 to July 31, 2015, although the hotels have been loading earlier than the start date in the past few releases.

In the back of my mind for the past month is the potential to book five nights for 25,000 IHG Rewards Club points for my road trip from Orlando to Knoxville, Tennessee in two weeks. Tomorrow I will see if that is a possibility. That is like traveling on $35 hotel nights through the southeast states.

What is better deal than IHG PointBreaks?

Today I took another look at potential routes to Knoxville. I filed a best rate guarantee for a Best Western hotel in Georgia, where the rate for a one-bedroom suite on Best Western is $109 and the rate on booking.com is $79.99 for the same room.

There is no reason I see for this best rate guarantee claim to be denied, yet I have never had a successful best rate guarantee claim with Best Western in the past five years. I did receive a $100 gift card a few years back when Best Western management had a meeting based on one of my blog posts criticizing their best rate guarantee denial and I was offered the room at the discount rate, but I had already made other plans by then.

I do not hold out much hope of getting an approved Best Western best rate guarantee. This is the only major chain I have been unsuccessful at getting a claim approved in the past two years. My claim today looks like one of my best chances.

Update May 21: Best Western brg claim approved for $80 rate with Best Western $100 Travel Card.

What is better than an IHG PointBreaks deal? Paying $95 for a Best Western suite and getting a $100 Best Western travel card in return.

Unfortunately, this stay in the first week of June is after the end date for the current Best Western Rewards promotion for a $50 Best Western travel card after two hotel stays. Hopefully there will be another Best Western Rewards promotion bonus in place for stays in June 2015.

An email from IHG Rewards Club listed these hotels in a preview of the preview for PointBreaks May 26 to July 31, 2015.

Here is a sampling of the nearly 150 properties that will be featured:

  • InterContinental® hotel Nha Trang, Vietnam
  • Crowne Plaza® hotel New Delhi Mayur Vihar Noida, India
  • Holiday Inn® hotel Andorra, Europe
  • Holiday Inn® hotel Cordoba, Argentina
  • Holiday Inn Express® hotel Frankfurt-Messe, Germany, Europe
  • Staybridge Suites® hotel Tallahassee I-10 East, Florida, United States
  • Candlewood Suites® hotel Washington-Fairfax, Virginia, United States

I can always route through Tallahassee for one cheap hotel night on my ‘drive out of Florida’ road trip.

Another option would be a Hyatt category 1 (plenty of those in Georgia) also at 5,000 points/night, or 4,000 with the limited-time Hyatt Visa 20% back offer.

On a different note, I have had good experience with Best Western and Choice Hotels BRGs. The one I am having trouble with is IHG.

Also, while difficult to find, Hilton Category 1 hotels. They are 10K, but you can grocery MS at 6x and it will only cost you around $24

@M – 4,000 points is a low price, but I value Hyatt points too highly. There are lower priced options.

@Mark D – HHonors 10 K would be nice. But I would need an HHonors credit card for that strategy.

What websites are you using to search for BRG rates, other than kayak and trivago?

  • Ric Garrido May 21, 2015

@M – Kayak is my go to site.

Best Western BRG approved a few minutes ago.

Woo hoo. Now I can say I have made the octa-trick BRG rounds with Best Western, Choice, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Marriott, Starwood and Wyndham.
