Club Carlson Visa eliminates bonus award night benefit June 1, 2015

Club Carlson Visa eliminates bonus award night benefit June 1, 2015 was the bad news of Good Friday this past weekend. Frequent Miler broke the news before Club Carlson sent out email notification. The notice was published on the back page of members’ Club Carlson Visa April statements.

Here is what you need to know.

1. Club Carlson free award night benefit on award stays of two or more nights will not apply to hotel award bookings made from June 1, 2015 and after.

2. Club Carlson Visa members may book Club Carlson award stay reservations before June 1 and receive the bonus award night benefit for stays to be completed after June 1. No changes to the reservation are allowed after June 1 without forfeiting the free award night. Bonus Award Night stays may not be booked after June 1, 2015.

3. Beginning June 1, 2015, you can earn a Free Night, good at any Carlson Rezidor hotel in the U.S. This Free Night will replace the current Bonus Award Night benefit. You’ll receive the new Free Night award upon renewal of your card after an annual spend of $10,000. Updated program terms and conditions will apply and be available on June 1, 2015.

4. To thank you for your continued loyalty, you can earn 30,000 bonus Gold Points® on your next Eligible Stay at a Carlson Rezidor hotel worldwide when you pay with your Club CarlsonSM Visa®. Offer ends August 31, 2015.

My wife and I have over 500,000 Club Carlson points in our accounts. We will be in Scandinavia in July and I plan to burn through about 300,000 points on 12 award nights in 2-night stays around Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. I do not want to wipe out my account balance since there will still be plenty of value in Club Carlson points for us.

On top of the 30,000 bonus points offer for your next stay paid with Club Carlson Visa, there is a new Club Carlson Triple Points offer for 60 points per dollar at hotels for stays April 6 to June 28, 2015. Club Carlson Visa members will earn 77 points per dollar + 30,000 bonus points + 1,000 points for mobile app booking.

There is also a 5,000 mobile app booking bonus.

Loyalty Traveler – For Club Carlson Elite Eyes Only 5,000 points for app booking and stay in April (March 30).

And there is Radisson MegaPoints rates which allows you to buy 10,000 bonus points for about $30 at some hotels.

Loyalty Traveler – List of hotels with Club Carlson MegaPoints rate for 10,000 bonus points (Feb 27)

I have checked out all these offers and I think a $130 USD stay in Vancouver this month will earn close to 60,000 Club Carlson points.

The free award night as a Club Carlson Visa member was one of the best values in hotel loyalty programs.

R.I.P. Bonus Award Nights

I plan to hold my Club Carlson Visa free night benefit wake for two weeks in July as I redeem all the remaining value I can book over the next two months with Club Carlson points.

Club Carlson London-2

In November 2014 we stayed in three London hotels using Club Carlson points, including The May Fair. Our three 2-night stays using the Club Carlson Visa Bonus Award Night benefit saved 170,000 points and more than $1,200 in room rates.

  1. I did not get any emails on this like others received. Has it been confirmed that the 30K bonus is for everybody? Do we have to do anything (ie. register or anything). I emailed and asked, but basically their only response was “you will still have the ability to earn Gold Points® on each purchase when you use your card “. It basically sounded like a template answer to an unread email.

  2. Some bloggers thought the email might have only gone out to Club Carlson Visa card members with recent stays.

    There is no registration required.

Here is the relevant text and it reads like this offer is open to all current Club Carlson Visa card members.

“As a Club CarlsonSM Visa® cardholder you will continue to enjoy the following benefits:
    • 10 points per $1 spent in eligible Net Purchases at Carlson Rezidor hotels worldwide – that’s in addition to the 20 points per dollar you earn as a Club Carlson member
    • 5 points per $1 spent in eligible Net Purchases everywhere else
    • 40,000 renewal bonus points each year when you renew your card by paying the annual fee
    • Gold Elite Status – which now includes a dining discount at participating hotel restaurants!
And, to thank you for your continued loyalty, you can earn 30,000 bonus Gold Points® on your next Eligible Stay at a Carlson Rezidor hotel worldwide when you pay with your Club CarlsonSM Visa®. Offer ends August 31, 2015. Terms and conditions apply.*
    * Bonus Points Offer Terms and Conditions

  3. Hi Ric… I knew I could count on you for a level headed non-greedy post about this development.

I’m disappointed like the rest but hey…It was too good to last! I do also wish I’d used it more, but am scrambling to get max benefit before it goes away with a huge 14 day stay in Australia in January. I appreciate the incredible value and return on my investment, even though it’s ending.

Bloggers and the folk they encourage to be greedy and entitled are harming this hobby more than they know. I knew there would be outrage from some of these bloggers. “how dare they end this promo giving me free stuff…I am a VIP because I signed up for a credit card”! Errr… No you’re not special at all because you have a laptop, a mediocre+ credit score and an adress. It’s sad how people view themselves and companies working hard to make a profit through thick and thin.

    Anyway…kudos to you sir.

  4. Good writeup Rick. I think a better alternative to this deval was to limit the free night to stays of three or four nights or longer. It wouldve forced people to burn more points to obtain the free night. Im still keeping my cards for the annual points for paying the fee.

  5. Do you know if the $10k spend to get a free night applies to this year or only this year but after June 1?
