Want low fares to Europe this summer? Fly from Canada. is a piece I wrote two weeks ago when I found fares from Vancouver YVR were hundreds of dollars less than fares to Europe from Seattle SEA, San Francisco SFO and Los Angeles LAX. This article examines lowest airfare for July departures from Toronto YYZ for 26 cities in Europe compared to the lowest fare from New York City region JFK/EWR to the same cities in July 2015.

For the fare comparison table below, airfare was compared using Google Flights for the lowest priced flights for a 9-day trip departing from Toronto YYZ and New York JFK, or EWR when a lower fare found. Toronto YYZ has the lower fare compared to flying from New York in July 2015 for 25 of 26 cities with only Warsaw, Poland fare $50 less than Toronto if you fly Aeroflot from JFK. For $50 more you can fly Air France from Toronto.

In some cases the fare difference is less than $25 and for some cities like Bilbao, Spain BIO, the same airlines of Air Canada and Lufthansa charge over $600 more to fly from JFK than YYZ for the same destination in July 2015. Edinburgh EDI is over $300 more to fly from New York than Toronto.

I’m checking rates recently too and in addition to YYZ/YVR, Montreal YUL is another good choice to get to Europe. AA has some fare via ORD that’s more than $300 cheaper than originating in ORD or NYC.
