Bologna, Genoa, Pisa, Turin and Venice are some of the airports in Italy with fares under $700 USD after taxes and fees on Lufthansa and partner Star Alliance carriers for flights from Vancouver, Canada in May and June and as low as $727 USD to fly to Venice in July and August 2015.
Lufthansa can get you directly from Vancouver to Germany on a long-haul nonstop flight. The routings with Air Canada tend to hopscotch across Canada to Toronto or some other airport before the flight to Europe.
These fares to Italy are hundreds of dollars less than travel from the west coast airports in the USA. Summer 2015 is the year for European travel from Canada if you want a deal and a second destination to visit from the USA. Pay for a separate ticket or redeem miles to get to a Canadian airport and you may find big savings flying to Europe from north of the USA border.
Italy stands out to me for flight deals from Vancouver with lower prices available for many secondary airports rather than flying directly to Rome or Milan.
Vancouver, Canada to Bologna, Italy May 2015
Lufthansa $678 roundtrip
Vancouver – Bologna, Italy – Lufthansa and Air Dolomiti
Sunday, May 10 to Sunday May 17
CAD $855.45 = USD $678.31

This flight has very short connection times in Munich which might leave you stranded in Munich if you miss the connection. That is not necessarily a bad thing. You can pay about $100 more for longer connection times in Germany if you do not want to risk a missed flight connection in Munich.
