My favorite part of this deal is there is time to plan without rushing to hastily book nonrefundable airline reservations.
Travel from San Jose, California to Reno, Nevada is $116 to $118 round trip. This means two round trips for $235 earn one free flight to a place like Vancouver, Canada for under $60 in taxes.
Kelley had the same response as I did about Reno being a boring destination for two trips when there are other interesting destinations to choose for not too much more in airfare.
Here are low one-way prices to some of the other cities from the San Francisco Bay Area with SFO, OAK and SJC airports. The price is the same in the Los Angeles area for many of these same destinations. Price is same in either direction, except for Canada destinations where the return is more expensive due to taxes.

The Northern Tier Frozen Tour
My developing idea is taking advantage of Alaska Airlines to fly to places I have not been, especially in winter.
Bozeman, Montana is the northern gateway to Yellowstone National Park. There are two lodges in Yellowstone open in January. Old Faithful Snow Lodge has rooms starting around $100 per night. Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel offers rooms starting at $90 per night. Round trip transportation from Holiday Inn Bozeman to Yellowstone National Park is available through Lodge shuttles for $53.50 each way. Rates at the Holiday Inn Bozeman are around $100 per night. Kalispell, Montana is near Glacier National Park. Most of the park roads are closed in winter, but there is limited access to parts of the park from the west entrance, less than an hour from Kalispell. The city tourism website for Kalispell shows microbreweries as a popular attraction for the region. Hotel rates are about $100 on weekdays and $90 on weekends with several brand name hotels in town. I planned a trip in fall 2013 to drive from Monterey to Yellowstone, then my parents wanted me to travel to Ireland with them. My dad’s health kept the Ireland trip from happening and by the time we cancelled Ireland, it was too late in the season for a driving trip to Yellowstone.
In a couple of weeks I will be in Ireland. Looks like Montana trips might happen flying Alaska Airlines in December and January to check out Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park in winter snow.
