Marriott spend-based Double Points Summer Promo June 1-August 31

Check your Marriott Rewards account promotion central. Marriott has sent out new targeted offers for a summer promotion Getaway Bonus. My offer is double points for up to 25,000 bonus points. That works out to 10 bonus points per dollar in hotel spend, on up to $2,500 in hotel spend. As if this were much incentive, the bonus points do not even kick in until the second stay. Marriott just posted higher than expected profits for 2014 Q1 and they are too stingy to give double points on the first stay?

There are some members reporting other offers with more points based on nights like 25,000 points after 15 nights. You can read about other offers in this FlyerTalk thread discussing the Marriott Getaway Bonus promotion.

In general, Marriott joins Club Carlson, Hilton and Starwood chains this summer in rewarding bonus points based on your hotel spend. Hyatt has only announced triple miles with select airlines. This is a decent offer for a business traveler not paying out-of-pocket, but not too exciting for a leisure traveler seeking a good hotel spend rebate.

Sitting in Marriott Charleston thinking the month of May is bonus pointless for Marriott stays.

I am sitting in a room at the Marriott Charleston South Carolina writing this and thinking I will get 1,332 points from this $110 room night. It works out to be about a 5% rebate value in points. Hotels.com would be a 10% value.

At least I am only paying $126 for the room night after tax for one night at the Marriott Charleston South Carolina. Marriott was asking $261 for the room I booked and reduced the rate to $110 based on my best rate guarantee claim against a $147 room rate from getaroom.com.

Double points will not be incentive for more Marriott stays. Hopefully September will bring back MegaBonus two stays for one free night certificate. Ironic, that nearly all the global hotel companies posted higher than expected profits, primarily based on the strength of their earnings in USA hotels, yet the promotions are relatively weak this summer.

I guess there will be even better earnings posted for Q2 and Q3 2014.

I have a 12 night stay coming up at a Residence Inn in MO. Gonna be a tough call whether, before this stay, I do a quick mattress run in order to hit the bonus threshold for my longer stay. Would be an easier call if the 12 night stay wasnt at only the $108 a night government rate.

Until the second stay or after the second stay?

  • DJP May 8, 2014

Its starting with the 2nd stay—dont know why that is since its just for points.

@Dan –I would do a mattress run. Would you make a mattress run if the promo was stay one night get 10,000 bonus points? 12 nights will mean 12,000 bonus points from this promo.

I think we will see with Marriott some division based promos. like stay 2 times at Fairfield and earn 5,000 pts.

I will do the promo because I have work travel planned this summer staying at Marriott at around $200/night stay for 5 days.

@Ric—forgot to list the IHG promo of 5,000 bonus points for 3 stays.

I look at 5,000 bp=$35. In the past I have seen BW and choice promos for $50 for 2-3 nights.

Still waiting to see what Choice and BW will be for the summer.

    @Dan @Ric
Actually I think Residence Inn gives half the points so only 6000 point when doubled

  • J May 8, 2014

Marriott customer care reports that promo begins with the third stay — after the second stay.

This promo blooooooooooows. I will be using this period to requalify for SPG Platinum on the number of stays, with maybe a handful of stays at Country Inn and Suites which has another “best of the worst” Summer promotion. Starwood’s promotion is nothing to jump up and down over, but at least it doesn’t make you wait until your third stay to start getting bonuses, and SPG points are worth much more than Marriott ones. Plus making Platinum at Starwood is easier than with Marriott. This Freddie Award for 2013 must’ve gone to the MI folks’ heads. Vote with your wallets people!

I never got a promo to show up, so I gave them a call. They tried to put me into the 20 nights gets you 35k tier, but knowing that I am only staying 18 nights, I got them to switch me to the 15 nights gets you 25k, but I have to call them to make sure I got it after August 31. Either way, not radically different from earlier offerings.
