This is a good offer from Club Carlson after a period away from good value promotions in late 2013.
38,000 bonus points after 3 nights is a good value. That is more than 75% of points needed for the top tier category 6 free night at 50,000 points. This bonus can be earned on a single 3-night stay which provides a lodging option for a better bonus than the other hotel chains offer for a single 3-night stay.
Assuming a member can redeem points at a hotel for $5 per 1,000 points value, an easy to reach objective, then 38,000 points are worth $190.
Assume the member books a $100 hotel room:
3 x $100 room rate nights = $300.
$300 earns 6,000 base points + 38,000 bonus points = 44,000 Club Carlson points. $220 return (44 x $5 redemption value per 1,000 points) on $300 in hotel spend is a good deal. It should be easy enough to get $300 in future hotel stays on $300 in spend or even earn this bonus for under $250 spend to stay 3 paid nights.
Of course, the value of points stretches even farther if you have the Club Carlson Visa benefit of one additional free night on award stays.

The beginning of 2014 looks like a good time for hotel stays with Marriott Rewards MegaBonus (Feb 1-April 30) with 2 stays earns one free category 1-4 or 1-5 night.
IHG Big Win II customized offer for 30,000 to 100,000 bonus points (January 1 – April 30).
Hyatt Gold Passport free night after 5 nights (January 15- April 30) for a category 1-4 hotel (up to 4 free nights). SPG seems to have a relatively weaker offer.
SPG Bring on the Nights Jan 5-April 30 for 2,500 bonus points after 5 nights is not enticing (yawn…).
One interesting observation is the April 30 date for the end of all these promotions. Looks like quarterly hotel loyalty promotions may be changing to trimester offers.
My hotel stay plan
I think I will be spreading my bedding between Club Carlson (3 nights), Marriott Rewards (4 nights), Hyatt (5 nights) and IHG (5 nights) to earn enough points and certificates for about six or seven free nights on 17 paid nights.
Perhaps even more free nights. I have already redeemed 30,000 points from IHG’s The Big Win 2013 for six free PointBreaks nights. I still have 20,000 points left over from $190 I paid on four hotel nights during the first Big Win 2013 offer. Ten IHG hotel nights for $190 certainly beats any Priceline, Hotwire or flash sale hotel rates.
Club Carlson 38,000 bonus points is a good deal and a competitive offer with the other 2014 beginning of year promotions.
