Club Carlson offers up to 50% bonus points for purchases from August 13 to October 15, 2013. Points normally cost $7 per 1,000 points with a 40,000 points per calendar year purchase limit. This offer allows a member to receive up to 60,000 points.

  • Buy 5,000 – 10,000 points and receive a 20% Bonus ($35 to $70).
  • Buy 11,000 – 30,000 points and receive a 30% bonus ($77 – $210).
  • Buy 31,000 – 40,000 points and receive a 50% Bonus ($217-$280).

Price per 1,000 points:

  • Buy 5,000 to 10,000 points and receive 6,000 to 12,000 points  (Cost = $5.83 per 1,000 points).
  • Buy 11,000 – 30,000 points and receive 14,300 to 39,000 points (Cost = $5.39 per 1,000 points).
  • Buy 31,000 – 40,000 points and receive 46,500 to 60,000 points (Cost = $4.67 per 1,000 points).

Club Carlson reward nights range across six hotel categories from 9,000 points to 50,000 points per night. Buying points can reduce the cost of hotel nights to $42 for a category 1 hotel or $234 for the highest category 6 hotels.

Radisson Fisherman’s Wharf San Francisco next week is $434 + tax or 44,000 points. $204 buys 44,000 points with this sale. San Francisco hotel prices are insanely high in 2013.

    I still have not signed up for a Club Carlson Visa even though I think it is one of the most useful cards to have with its one free night on any award stay.

    How is buying Vanilla Reload or most other MS not better? BTW US bank pulls Transunion in NJ if you were planning on applying (pretty sweet since most others pull Equifax)

    Buy a $500 Vanilla Reload, 2520 points for $3.95, buying points is way more expensive. Almost 4x as expensive to buy points from Club Carlson.

    @hdawg – that might be a better tactic for getting cheap Club Carlson points for someone with a Club Carlson Premier card.

    Although, getting 60,000 points that way is going to require a lot of purchases. There are likely more people who will find spending $280 for 60,000 points a better option than charging $10,000+ on a credit card.

    tushay Garrido tushay, it is simply an alternative and agree with you completely. With Club Carlson card you also can book 2 nights for the “price” (points) of one night. 50K points for 2 nights at a category 6 hotel is a great deal. But if it is more than 2 nights it is only the last night that is free.

    San Francisco has been crazy high all year. I have not stayed in the city on a paid rate in 18 months.

    The high price of city hotels in California is one reason I have been focused on getting out to National Parks much of this year.

    I’d call it a question of convenience and VR availability. If VRs aren’t available to you, this is probably a good buy. If they ARE available, …

    Buying 60k CC points requires 24 Vanilla Reloads at $500 each.
    Spend = $12,098.80
    Load Value = $12,000
    Fees = $98.80
    Points Earned = 60,480
    CPP = $.00157

    Buying 60k CC points with this promotion requires 1 charge of $280.
    Spend = $280
    Load Value = $0 (Nothing to “liquidate”)
    Fees = $280
    Points Earned = 61,400 (assuming you use your CC card)
    CPP = $.00456

    So, yes, the promotion is 4x the price. In total, you end up spending an additional $185.20 going through the promotion. Weigh that against the cost of your time fetching VRs and the opportunity cost of having to use your VR load limits on this.

    I’m actually on the fence on this one.

    BTW, does anyone know if the promotion would count as “Hotel” spend if you put it on your Sapphire Preferred? Or, I guess, if you’re really crafty, you could pay for the promotion fee with a Visa gift card from an office supply store. 😉
