The new list of PointBreaks hotels for stays through October 31, 2013 is available for booking hotels at 5,000 points per night.
Every time these lists come out I read several comments on other blogs about how there are few interesting properties. I would love to stay at an InterContinental on PointBreaks reward nights for 5,000 points per night, but my travel plans have never worked out to coincide with a PointBreaks opportunity like that.
I am quite happy to get a $30 hotel night on PointBreaks when rates are $110 after tax. That $80 saved on the hotel room buys me 500 to 600 miles in gas travel.
Today is the final day to buy IHG Rewards Club points as low as $5.75 per 1,000 points. That makes a PointBreaks reward night come out to $28.75 for a hotel night that might otherwise be priced at $100 to $150 or more. The cost is a low $33.75 per night if you buy only 10,000 points.

My travel plans next month include road tripping The Northern Tier
My only plans so far during the next two months is a National Parks road trip through the mountain states of Idaho, Wyoming and Montana in late September.
A national education organization I used to belong to when I represented college students from all over the country referred to this region including Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas as The Northern Tier. These low population states banded together to get better representation for their region.
Ten years ago I used my United 1K status to match to Alaska Airlines MVP Gold top tier and then did several $158 eight-segment flights to reach 35 segments during a fall 2003 promo for 100,000 bonus miles. I spent several days routing around Idaho and eastern Washington on cheap San Jose (SJC) – Portland (PDX) tickets while transiting through Boise and Lewiston. The last time I road tripped through this part of the country was 1994.
Stringing together hotel nights at $30 per night is some serious hotel savings with IHG PointBreaks.
I recall a few years back having a lunch meeting in Monterey with a hotel program CEO. He made the comment that hotels are expensive when you consider every $400 hotel night is a lifestyle purchase that could have bought something more tangible like a brand new computer.
That was an unexpected insight to hear from a CEO.

This round of PointBreaks for me might mean getting several $30 hotel nights to reduce the cost of my trip.

I see plenty of value in this current list of PointBreaks without even getting on an airplane to take advantage of the luxury hotels in the InterContinental brand in places like Jordan and the Ukraine.
