The Marriott Edition luxury lifestyle brand developed with Ian Schrager is about to open in London. This will be the second Edition hotel after Istanbul and there are another six Edition hotels in the pipeline.
The first Edition Hotel opened in Waikiki in September 2010 and within one year the owners claimed Marriott management was costing them business. In August 2011 the hotel owners kicked Marriott out in a middle of the night hotel coup by replacing the Marriott managers, followed by bankruptcy within days after Marriott sued for breach of a 30-year management contract.
In June 2012 a judge ruled the hotel owners to pay $20.7 million in damages to Marriott.
The Modern Honolulu, as the hotel is now called, reported business improved 70% in the year following the removal of Marriott management.
The London Edition
The London EDITION has 173 rooms on seven floors in a location near the British Museum. Room rates look to start in the 270 to 350 GBP range for dates I checked in October and November. Bring a car and overnight parking is 45 GBP.
Marriott sells 3 Edition Hotels for $800 million
A hotel news story this week is Marriott is in the process of selling the London Edition and two other Edition hotels in New York and Miami Beach for $800 million.
The Miami Beach hotel is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2014 and includes residential units anticipated to be some of the most expensive properties for sale in South Florida. Marriott retains ownership of the residential units in the Miami Beach Edition. New York Clock Tower Edition is expected to open in early 2015.
Another Edition Hotel in Bangkok is scheduled for 2015 completion. Marriott’s website indicates there are three other Edition hotels currently in development. Places I saw mentioned in press releases include Los Angeles on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood and Abu Dhabi. Is Chicago the other location?
