Conrad and Waldorf Astoria stays 1,000 United miles per night to Dec 31, 2013

Earning 1,000 United Mileage Plus miles per night for stays at Waldorf Astoria and Conrad luxury hotels is a good bonus in lieu of points at these two brands if you are not spending in the stratosphere. This Hilton HHonors promotional offer from July 18 through December 31, 2013 requires advance registration at hhonors.com/luxury/united.

The 1,000 bonus United miles per night is in addition to the normal earning rate as a HHonors Point & Miles Earner for your stay.

In my analyses of earning frequent flyer miles through hotel stays, the opportunity to Double Dip with Hilton HHonors stays and earn points plus miles is the best way to acquire a large number of miles with the HHonors program. HHonors has a poor points to miles transfer rate with 10,000 HHonors point exchanging into 1,000 Mileage Plus miles.

Last year in December 2012 I stayed at the Conrad Miami for $100 per night. That meant a Points & Points bonus of 500 extra points per night based on my $100 room rate. In December 2013 that Conrad Miami hotel would earn 1,000 miles per night + 500 miles for the stay.

Since Hilton HHonors has one of the worst points to miles transfer rates, the best way to earn miles from Hilton stays is to set your HHonors earning preference to Points & Miles.

$700 base rate stay on 3 nights analysis

This offer applies to the two hotel brands in Hilton HHonnors that tend to the highest rates. Finding a Waldorf Astoria or Conrad for under $250 per night can be a challenge, but not elusive.

Assume a 3 night stay at $700 base rate for the stay at a W-A or Conrad hotel.

Points & Points = 7,000 base points + 3,500 bonus points.

Point & Mileage Plus miles = 7,000 base points + 3,000 UA bonus miles for three nights and 700 miles as a Point & Variable Miles earner.

Considering Hilton HHonors would normally only earn 500 miles per stay with Points & Fixed Miles earning or 700 miles for the stay with Points & Variable Miles earning, this promotion over the next few months is a great way to pick up 1,000 bonus United Mileage Plus miles for every night you stay at Waldorf Astoria or Conrad hotels.

Unless you paying a very high average rate like $500+, then switching your earning preference to Points & Miles for stays at Conrad and Waldorf-Astoria during this promotion period is a better value if you want Mileage Plus miles.

Hello Ric – thanks for the detailed post. Do you think the “stay cool” rate will qualify with this promo? Thanks.

@gymrat – Due to the opaque wording in the bonus offer T&C “Specific discounted rate plans, offers or promotions may also be ineligible for bonusing.”
I suggest you call HHonors to get clarification on the eligibility of any specific discount rate like “stay cool”.

with 90 to 300,000 point redemptions per night in NYC I think they can afford to give away 1k per night in miles now

Hey I’m staying at a Waldorf Astoria property (Casa Marina) in August but I booked it through Amex’s fine hotel and resorts program. I saw that you had to book the reservation through the hilton website. Is there anyway I can still get the bonus? Thanks so much,

I really don’t know much about Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program except for what I read on the other BoardingArea blogs. I do not know how they handle loyalty benefits and promotions.
