I’ve seen varying answers on if this can be applied to reward redemption nights. Your thoughts?

  • Silverfalls March 21, 2013

You need 95 nights for a stay at top category with the promo points alone. Even with weekend nights, one will need 47 plus nights. Hilton points are worse than any points. Staying at Hilton for the sake of getting bonus points are pointless

@Mark – I think standard award stays will not earn the bonus points. Nearly all promotions are designed to incentivize new paid bookings. That is just my opinion.

The promotion FAQ did not address award stays directly. The FAQ links to HHonors T&C for definition of eligible stays.

I think this is the relevant clause for the promotion:

14.Members will not earn points or miles for Reward Stays or hotel stays redeemed with a Marketing Partner’s discount/free certificate (e.g. frequent flyer award or travel award), unless otherwise stated on the certificate. But if a Member is using Room Upgrade Rewards, any money spent on the original reservation will earn points consistent with these Terms. Members may earn points (not miles) for incidental charges at a hotel within the Hilton Worldwide portfolio during a Reward Stay, provided such charges are deemed eligible folio charges at Hilton®, Conrad® Hotels and Resorts, DoubleTree by Hilton™, Embassy Suites®, Hilton Garden Inn®, Hilton Grand Vacations®, and the Waldorf Astoria hotels. Members will not earn points for incidental charges during a Reward Stay at a Hampton Inn®, Hampton Inn & Suites®, Home2 Suites by Hilton® or Homewood Suites by Hilton® hotel. Members will not earn points for incidental charges during hotel stays redeemed with a Marketing Partner’s discount/free certificate unless otherwise stated on the certificate. For purposes of counting stays and nights for Elite tier qualification (as explained below), Reward Stays will count towards the number of overall stays and nights.

    Ric,
I’ll be staying at Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo resort for 2 nights in April. My wife is really excited about the decor. Under the new rates cost has gone down from 35k points to 20k for April. The rates are about $100 per night.. I’m thinking about redeeming points for 1 night and paying for 1st to get the current promo 2k bonus, 1000 stay points (Gold) and 1000 VS miles. Aspirational properties are now out of reach so I though about burning my disHHonors points… would you agree?

  • Smart Traveler March 27, 2013

@ Andreas: According to HH’s T&C you will neither earn HH Points nor VS miles if you redeem HH points for one night of your two nights stay at H Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino:

“If at least one night of the Member’s stay is consumed with the use of HHonors Rewards Points, the entire stay is considered a “Reward Stay” and no HHonors Points may be earned, except that if Member is using Room Upgrade Rewards, any money spent on the original reservation will earn points and/or miles consistent with these Terms.”

@Smart traveler.. thank you for sharing this info.. I would have missed out on a lot of miles without that. I guess I will just pay for both nights.

@andreas – missed your initial comment. As Smart Traveler states the rules of HHonors are quite punitive with last year’s T&C change.

I wrote about that last year and members suggested it was a rule seldom enforced.

Anyone have current experience with mixing paid and award nights on the same stay and points earned?

  • andreas April 2, 2013

Ric- Thanks for the response. I’m going to book one night award reservation in my wife’s name using my points. Hopefully that will take care of it. If it doesn’t work oh well.. I’ll just take my chances. Not worth worrying about 5k disHHonors.
