Hilton Honors loyalty program Hilton Hotels Worldwide Hotel loyalty 2012-Q1 promotions

Hilton HHonors More Points Q1-2012 promotion

Hilton HHonors new promotion offers 1,000 bonus points per night plus 5,000 bonus points for two night weekend stays from January 1, 2012 through March 31, 2012. There is no earning limit for bonus points. Stays with check-in prior to January 1 or checkout after March 31, 2012 will count for this promotion for nights stayed within the promotion period.

Hilton HHonors More Points promotion registration is required before hotel checkout to be eligible for this bonus points offer.

Weekend Stay 5,000 bonus points is Good Value

Weekend nights include the four nights from Thursday through Sunday, but only one 5,000 point bonus may be earned per weekend. These are combinable bonuses of per night and weekend bonus, so two nights as Thursday-Friday, Friday-Saturday, or Saturday-Sunday stay earns 7,000 bonus points for the two nights and 1,000 bonus points for any additional nights of an extended stay.

One Week Stay Bonus Points

A Saturday check-in for a seven night stay will earn the 5,000 points weekend bonus twice for Saturday-Sunday nights after check-in and Thursday-Friday nights with Saturday checkout, plus 7,000 points for seven nights. This 7-night stay earns 17,000 bonus points in addition to regular 15 points + elite bonus for Points & Points earners or Points & Miles.

Spend $1,000 for a Saturday to Saturday week and you will pull in 32,000 points as a Points & Points earner and possibly more as an elite member. That is a nice rebate on hotel spend.

Non-Participating Hilton Worldwide Properties mostly in USA.

Hilton HHonors once again has a promotion with a long list of nonparticipating hotels. Over 200 hotels in the USA are not eligible for this promotion bonus. Only ten hotels outside the US opted out of the 2012 Q-1 More Points promotion.

Loyalty Traveler Analysis

This HHonors ‘More Points’ promotion seems geared to the leisure traveler. I think it is a good value weekend offer for HHonors members.

Assume $150 per night and a two night stay with Friday check-in and Sunday check-out at a participating Hilton brand. $300 for a HHonors blue member with no elite status earning Points & Points accrues 4,500 points for $300 in hotel spend and 7,000 bonus points with the More Points promotion for this two night weekend stay.

11,500 points is a good rebate on a two night stay. Complete two or three weekend stays over the next few months and you have the points for a Points & Money reward at a high end Hilton property. The points in this case might be worth $8 to $9 per 1,000 points on a future hotel stay and provide a 30% rebate in the $300 weekend stay example.

Some Hampton Inn hotels might only be $60 per night. In this case a person might spend $140 after tax for a two night weekend stay and earn about 9,000 HHonors points. ($120 x 15 points + 7,000 bonus points = 8,800 points).

That is a really good value rebate on a cheap Hampton Inn weekend stay.

Business Blues

1,000 bonus points per night for Sunday to Thursday night stays means some HHonors members might spend $1,000 on a five night stay and only earn 5,000 bonus points with the More Points promotion. That is a disappointing hotel stay bonus compared to double, triple or quadruple points where this same five night stay would earn 10,000 to 30,000 bonus points for a $1,000 hotel stay.

Bottom Line

This is a good deal for a two night weekend stay at participating Hilton brand hotels over the next three months. Many members will find 1,000 bonus points per hotel night a weak rebate if their travel does not include consecutive weekend nights for the larger 5,000 bonus points incentive.

When trying to find what rates do not qualify for this offer, you are directed to a page that does not display which rates and promos are excluded. I gather excluded rates and promos are similar to those in the past like from the Resort Escapes promo found here. http://hhonors1.hilton.com/en_US/hh/landing/srp_exclusions_q4/index.do

    @kumar – you are correct.

I forgot to add the 1,000 bonus points for each weekend night in addition to the 5,000 bonus points.

    7,000 points (Sat-Sun) + 3,000 (Mon-Wed) + 7,000 (Thu-Fri) = 17,000 points + regular base points and elite bonus points.

I adjusted the numbers in the post.

Earning a rebate of 32,000+ points on a $1,000 stay is a great rebate with this promotion.

I am new HH member and came across something interesting. From HH website
http://hhonors1.hilton.com/en_US/hh/points/hotels.do, that talks about earning base(non-promo) hh points, it says:

“Eligible Rate stays are stays at all rates except travel agency discount rates…”
    &
“Stays that are booked via third party websites are not Eligible Stays irrespective of rate paid, for the purpose of earning points, miles or stay credit toward Elite tier status…”

So this is making me wonder if one books through sites like Orbitz/Travelocity, will one get base HH points for their stays? What about promo points (assuming hotels are participating)?

Anyone have experience with booking through OTAs and getting HH point successfully?

  • Ric Garrido January 17, 2012

@avi404 – As a general rule booking hotel rooms through online travel agencies like Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity cancel out the ability to earn hotel loyalty points through programs like HHonors, SPG, Priority Club and other major chains.

The reason is simple. OTA bookings cost the individual hotel a large chunk of the room rate (about 25%). The purpose of hotel loyalty programs is a marketing incentive to get guests to book directly through the hotel chain’s own websites and keep more of the room rate with the hotel company.

When you do not book directly with the hotel company, then you generally do not get hotel loyalty points.

Marriott and Hyatt are reported to offer benefits to hotel loyalty elite members regardless of booking avenue, but no points or hotel stay credit for elite qualification.

Thanks Ric for the quick response.

I am going to call club carlson to ask about their policy but wondering if you (or anyone else reading this) had any personal experience with club carlson booking with OTAs and receiving points?

  • avi404 January 17, 2012

Confirmed with club carlson that booking through OTAs are not eligible to earn base or promo points.

I READ YOUR PRIOR POST ABOUT BUYING POINTS FOR CHEAPER LAST YEAR CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME HOW MUCH YOU SELL FOR AND IF THEY ARE GOOD AT ALL HILTONS?

  • Ric Garrido January 17, 2012

@Phyllis – Purchased points can be used for reward nights at any Hilton brand hotel.

Points are $10/1,000 when buying 10,000 points or more.

There is no limit when buying points needed for a reward at time of booking the reward stay.

Any idea if this promotion will work alongside the Delta 2012 bonus miles promo?

  • Robert January 28, 2012

Hi, We’re going to Rose Hall by Hilton (cannot wait!!) Feb 4th. We booked through a third party travel company. Does this qualify for HH points and the Q1 bonus?

  • Christopher January 29, 2012

Does this promotion work with the ‘Any Weekend Anywhere’ promo? If it doesn’t, it would be more beneficial to get the standard advance purchase rate so that the extra points could be earned.

  • Ric Garrido January 30, 2012

@Scott – This should work with Delta miles offer.

@Robert – Bookings through third party online travel agencies generally do not count. A third party travel company may or may not count depending on how the reservation was booked.

Call and get your HHonors number in the reservation and you might get lucky.

  • Ric Garrido February 21, 2012

    @Greg

    7-night stay spending $1,000.

    Points & Points earner = 15 points/$1 = 15,000 points.
    Sat-Sun weekend bonus = 5,000 points.
    Thu-Fri weekend bonus = 5,000 points.
    Sat-Fri 7 nights at 1,000 points bonus per night = 7,000 points.

    = 32,000 points.
