Today I flew over Los Angeles and I saw the best view I have ever seen of downtown Los Angeles. The plane flew right by the LA Staples Center and I recognized the adjacent JW Marriott/Ritz-Carlton building. I haven’t been in “downtown” Los Angeles since 1977. This might be the year I finally return.

JW Marriott Los Angeles at LA Live is celebrating its 1st birthday on Tuesday, February 15, 2011. The hotel is offering a special “Happy Birthday” package for 10 lucky guests who will be able to book the JW Marriott 1,566 sq. ft. Chairman Suite for $1.

The Chairman Suite is the hotel’s most luxurious suite with views of the Los Angeles skyline. The package also includes two glasses of champagne at the gLAnce Bar, breakfast for two at LA Market restaurant and complimentary valet parking. This package is only available for a Friday or Saturday night stay from August 6, 2011 to September 10, 2011.

[I would like to see the view tonight from the Chairman Suite when the winter air is crystal clear in Los Angeles. This package is for August and September when smog tends to be the worst in LA. ]

Happy Birthday packages go on sale at 9:00am PST/12:00pm EST on Tuesday, February 15.

[2-15-11 Update: Turns out JW Marriott L.A. posted the incorrect time of 9am on their website all weekend prior to this deal. My blog post is evidence this 9am PST time was posted since I took a JW Marriott L.A. website screenshot that was an image included in the original post here.

The original J.W. Marriott February 9 press release dated stated 8amPST as the sale time, however, the JW Marriott website showed 9amPST as the sale time up until the day before the sale. Many unlucky potential guests like me found the time had changed from 9amPST to 8amPST when loading the JW Marriott L.A. website to learn the sale had happened the hour before.

We all make mistakes, but there is no evidence I was able to find for J.W. Marriott L.A. admitting to the fact the incorrect time of 9amPST/12:00pmEST for this offer was posted on their website for days prior to the sale. There is plenty of evidence that other people, like me, arrived to the site slightly before 9amPST to learn the sale had already happened.

And apparently the price of $80,000 and $90,000 even showed up for some guests who looked to book at 8amPST.

Happy first birthday JW Marriott Los Angeles.

  1. So how does this work? The first 10 people to sign up wins the package for $1 like Discover America Promotions?

  3. SC – I assume date plays into it. The first ten people to find an available date win the package.

I assume if you are going for Sep 10 and someone else beats you to the final booking checkout phase, then you will not have time to try another date before it is booked out by one of the other package winners.

I do not know if there is more than one Chairman Suite?

  4. Will they check your ID for the date of birth, since it’s a happy birthday package?

  5. The hotel’s birthday is Feb 15. This offer celebrates the JW Marriott turning 1 year old.

As long as you are an adult (18), I don’t think the hotel cares about your birthday.

  6. There was a fluke in their system. After sitting by and waiting for the promotion to open at 11am EST and receiving “rate not available” messages, I was finally successful in reaching the screen to select the Chairman Suite for the night of 8/20/11…BUT, the price was $80,000USD. So I bypassed.
    No Thanks Marriott.

  7. This actually started at 8am PST, not 9am. As you can imagine, they were sold out by 8:01 am.

  8. Now that pisses me off that they changed the time by one hour. I just walked out of a meeting to get to my computer and see the time was changed to an hour earlier.

I have some expletives I am saying right now. I will be adult enough not to write them here.
